Death by productivity porn

One of the biggest flaws of productivity porn is thinking that you need to work everyday to achieve results.

You need to show up everyday - that doesn’t mean you have to be productive, you can’t possibly work 5-6 hours everyday with high mental clarity.

Humans were hunter gatherers before we became farmers, we hunted once every few days and then rested. There will be blocks of time you will work where you will produce 10x your normal result, rest you will peruse docs, scroll social media, talk to friends, play games.

Alternatively, don’t be forced to take breaks. There will be moments where you will achieve a state of flow - don’t break it.

“Inspiration is perishable - act on it immediately.” - @naval

Pomodoro is a popular technique, it is conducive for a flow state. For Digital Workers like us, it can be hard to not be distracted. I need to work on an authentication system right now, not write a Twitter thread! For me, Forest, the app, helps.

“You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” - If you, like me, are addicted to Social Media, Netflix and such, start tracking your usage. Uninstalling doesn’t help much, I’m sure you’ve found that - but unfollowing does help. For me, Social Media and Shorts/Reels are my demons. Create a fiction between you and the system - use YouTube, Instagram and Twitter only from laptop (not that hard). Unsubscribe and unfollow mercilessly.

“Spend enough time in a state of frenetic shallowness and you permanently reduce your capacity to perform deep work.” - Cal Newport.

Doing deep work outside main job improves focus and retention. For me: Kickboxing and Reading.

When I am on the punching bag, it’s me, my coach and the bag. Phone, Work, Dinner - all are postponed till my body tires and my soul is crushed. A beautiful, wonderful feeling.

Recently I got into reading books and writing what I learn, so a good book and a good thread idea does it for me. :)

Ironically, I’m probably deep working when on Netflix or scrolling YouTube reels, but that headache and nauseousness afterwards that I experience is a sign that it’s wrong. The brain craves simulation in little effort, the internet is happy to provide you with that.

And that is all for my late night writing session. No conclusions, nothing - goodnight, I feel sleepy.
